Bridal Skin Prep Guide
I’m so excited to work with you on your wedding day! My goal is to make sure your makeup looks absolutely flawless—and the most important factor in achieving that is the condition of your skin.
The healthier your skin is, the more beautiful your makeup will look. While makeup can effectively even out discoloration, it can’t fully disguise texture, dryness, or flakiness. That’s why a consistent skincare routine is so important in the months leading up to your wedding. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s skin that is healthy, balanced, and predictable, so your makeup applies smoothly and lasts all day.
To help guide you, I’ve created this Bridal Skin Prep Guide to simplify what can often feel like an overwhelming world of skincare and treatments. Inside, you’ll find a straightforward, essential routine that I recommend for all brides. It’s designed to be approachable and effective—no complicated steps or expensive products required.
I’ve also included a section with optional, more advanced treatments for those who are interested in investing a bit more to truly elevate their skin ahead of the big day.
THE ESSENTIAL ROUTINE
6-12 Months Out
Establish a simple, but consistent skincare routine. I mention categories of products below, which I have a list of suggestions for.
Cleanse (AM + PM) Use a gentle cleanser to remove dirt and buildup without stripping the skin. If you wear makeup, I suggest double cleansing in the evening. First, use a cleansing balm to melt off your makeup, then cleanse with your cleanser.
Moisturize (AM + PM) Use a moisturizer appropriate for your skin type after cleansing.
Exfoliate (1–3x per week) Removes dead skin cells for smoother makeup application.
Vitamin C (AM) Brightens skin and improves tone.
SPF (Daily) Protects your skin and prevents damage. SPF 30+ recommended.
Begin using a Vitamin A product (aka a Retinoid) - Retinoids increase cell turnover, unclogs pores, boosts collagen, and helps diminish hyperpigmentation. If you do not use Retinoids yet, there is typically an adjustment period that can include dryness, breakouts or irritation. To mangage this adjustment period, I suggest starting with a gentler, lower doser product, 1x/week, and very slowly build up the frequency of use and then the intensity of the product.
If you have specific skin concerns, the earlier you can find a trusted esthetician the better. By starting treatments at least 6 months out, you are able to see the full benefits of your investment. It is also important to try anything you’re doing for the first time in advance on the off-chance that you experience any adverse reactions.
3 - 6 Months Out
Continue your skincare routine which I outlined above.
Neuromodulators - Most people call this “Botox” although, Botox is just one brand of neuromodulator. There are actually newer neuromodulator brands that can work better for you than Botox. This is something you would want to discuss with your medical aesthetician/dermatologist. If you are new to neuromodulators, I would suggest getting your first treatment 5 months out from your wedding date. That way you can see how you like it. It typically lasts about 4 months, so you would have your second treatment 1 month out from your wedding date. Most neuromodulators take 2 weeks to take full effect. By getting it 4 weeks out, everything has time to take effect and settle nicely.
Facials - Facials every 4 - 6 weeks will help ensure your skin looks it’s absolute best.
SkinPen Microneedling - Microneedling is a process that induces the production of collagen and elastin which can help with reducing acne scars, fine lines, enlarged pores, and uneven skin tone or hyperpigmentation. To really see the benefits, I suggest getting 3 - 4 sessions spaced 4 - 6 weeks apart, with the final session at least 1 month prior to your wedding date.
Laser Treatments - There are a whole host of laser treatments that treat everything from texture, to dark spots, to fine lines and wrinkles. If you have a specific concern, I suggest speaking with a reputable esthetician or dermatologist about your options. I have personally had excellent results lightening dark spots with an IPL laser treatment.
Filler - This is always a personal choice, and never something anyone needs to do. If you’ve already been considering it, the months leading up to your wedding can be a great time to explore it thoughtfully and gradually.
1 - 3 Months Out
Continue your skincare routine which I outlined above.
Continue with regular facials.
Try adding dermaplaning to your facial to see if your skin tolerates it well. Dermaplaning uses a sterile, surgical-grade scalpel to scrape off dead skin cells and fine hairs known as vellus hairs, revealing brighter, fresher-looking, silky-smooth skin which maked the makeup lay on the skin amazingly.
Most people tolerate it well but there is the occassional person (typically with active acne, rosacea, or eczema) who it is not recommended for.
Complete any additional esthetic treatments outlined above to give your skin time to heal and show the benefits.
2 Weeks Out
Continue your skincare routine which I outlined above.
Stop using any Retinoid products as they can cause dryness and flaking during the makeup application.
Do not use any new products as they can cause unexpected skin reactions.
Final facial with dermaplaning.
Stop using any actives.
Focus on your simple skincare routine - keep it simple at this point: cleanser, moisturizer, vitamin C and SPF.
